WHY I BOUGHT A TAMIL SONG CASSETTE - NAAN PADUM PAADAL

PHOTO: A throw back, from the youthful days of 1992, I was asked to handle a session on group dynamics at the Rotaract District training conclave.

The old school of thoughts believe Personality Development should start early in a student's life which is a true reflection of their inner being. It can be defined as a set of traits that shape the inner and outer being in a person with organized pattern of behavior that makes a person distinctive. Things like Time management, Public Speaking talents, Communication skills etc are things that need to be imbibed early in life. I firmly believe that Top 12 Most Important Personality Development Tips that a budding student should prepare at the beginning of a career are

• Know yourself. Obviously before you get on developing something you need to know all about it first. ...

• Bring positivity in your outlook. ...

• Have an opinion. ...

• Meet new people. ...

• Read more often and develop new interests. ...

• Be a good listener. ...

• Be courteous. ...

• Work on your Body Language.

Well it was 1984, as Chairman of Cosmo Jaycees Youth club I had planned a Time management course for our members. All of us were friends from the same school and most of us were in the 10th STD baring a few seniors who have not yet left the club as others did when I took up the chairmanship.

Our Course Faculty was a hon. Jaycee of our parent chapter. Those days there were just land line numbers and the members were informed by a pre announcement or by India Post card. For other club members who would love to come to our club programs the information used to go by the EVENTS TODAY column on most Newspapers.

It was customary to visit the chief guest a day before the event to finalize the detailing. Upon reaching the staff quarters where Jc. Rm.R used to live, with my secretary (those days the entire board members used to hang out together) we were greeted warmly and asked to sit in the cozy sofa. The planning for the event started and we all settled for a box of colored chalk pieces should be made available for the faculty to conduct the course.

Then an unusual question surprised us. Rm.R asked us what the budget for his memento is. My secretary and I looked at each other, I never thought we had to give something to our parent club member who is coming as a faculty, yet we did not open our mouth. We hardly had extra money in our club to spend lavishly as all of us were students and were enjoying club life with our pocket money. I meekly said, Sir we are planning to buy you a book which will cost us Rs 65/-, and he immediately said , don’t worry, I am planning to buy the latest release of  songs of “ Naan Padum Padal” the Cassette will cost you Rs. 35/-  The fact that there was a demand surprised us but the later part of choice made us laugh and accept.

On the day of the event we all assembled at our regular meeting point – the Kikani High School Class room which was not yet ready. We were in for a course on Time Management but the watchman there was not in time and we had to wait for over an hour standing below a shady tree. Understanding the predicament our faculty suggested a change in the venue, we were not prepared! He took us to his office in GCT. Soon we were inside the immaculate Geological Laboratory of the Government College of Technology, Coimbatore.

The sheer high ceiling and the college flavor surrounded by the beautiful landscaped garden outside and the meteoric sediments that looked like rocks from all around the world in the inside, gripped us for the next few hours while we underwent an extensive step by step course on how to plan our 24 hours in a calendar day. He was very kind enough to arrange for tea for the snacks we had already brought that made for a decent fellowship time. We learnt the custom of giving a memento to our guest who we invited thereafter and realized we were always double return gifted.

When I see in the social media and hear friends who make thousands on a ID course and that too for the management and employees of great enterprises where the employees are required to attain some degree of smartness, feel so blessed that I grew up amongst the top notch ID faculties whose down line today are international coaches and Corporate leaders.
