THE WORK - LIFE BALANCE CONUNDRUM

In recent times, a heated debate has emerged in my country about the number of hours the present generation—with an average age of 28.5 years—should dedicate to work. Some advocate for 70 hours a week, while others suggest an even more daunting 90 hours. These figures have sparked questions about the essence of work, life, and balance.

My journey with work began at the tender age of 18, fresh out of school. Driven by the ambition of becoming an entrepreneur, I pursued afternoon college while apprenticing at a workshop to complete my AMIE in Mechanical Engineering. Later, I ventured into the retail industry, where I worked almost 14 hours a day, 365 days a year—amounting to an astonishing 95-100 hours per week. These years offered me a taste of both success and failure, shaping my understanding of perseverance and dedication.

Today, after dedicating over 35 years to an industry I deeply cared for, I have embraced a new vocation. Interestingly, I now find myself sleeping less yet feeling more energized. The difference lies in the diversity of my pursuits: philanthropy, photography, writing, and entrepreneurship. By blending work with multiple interests, I have discovered that hard work evolves into something more fulfilling when combined with passion and purpose.

In this digital age, the advent of AI and a tech-savvy approach have transformed my once-grueling hours into efficient, smart work. I measure hard work not merely by the hours invested but by the outcomes derived. My multiple interests allow me to balance time effectively among my passions, societal contributions, earnings, and family commitments.

Reflecting on my journey, I realize that work-life balance is not a fixed formula but a personal equation. It requires effort, adaptability, and self-awareness. The key lies in integrating various facets of life—work, leisure, and relationships—into a harmonious blend. Ultimately, this balance has helped me understand what it takes to be a good human being.

The conundrum of work-life balance might persist as a debate, but the resolution lies in individual choice and perspective. For me, it is about aligning hard work with smart strategies, pursuing passions, and finding meaning in every endeavor.
